Click: the development of an innovative media in the French ecosystem

Abstract

Lancé in 2013, Clique gained some visibility in the French media landscape in six years. With a strong focus on urban culture and in particular its music component, Clique was first a short-lived weekly broadcast on Canal + (the media publishing group) and then focused on the Internet on a long-term basis, in particular through its Youtube channel and also on its website. Thanks to the success of these two channels, owing in particular to the format of the long interviews conducted by Mouloud Achour, a figure representative of the media, Clique was offered a return to the Canal + antennas in 2016 with the ‘Gros Journal’. In the meantime, Clique has taken care to broaden its range of issues by including more and more subjects of society, the environment and even geopolitics. At the start of 2017, a dominical broadcast, called ‘Clique Dimanche’, was set up by Canal +. After all these successful TV tests, Clique finally launched its own television channel, Clique TV, on 4 November 2018 with the intention of making television otherwise. To this end, the new television channel, still hosted by Canal +, offers numerous programmes with various themes, based on conversations between facilitators and guests, and also broadcasts video clips, reports and even short films. Through all these stages, Clique has always defined itself as a medium dealing not with current affairs but with the current world, with the constant concern to produce original content, both in substance and in form, while calling on guests who are not very visible in the French media space. While the target audience of the media seems historically young, Clique’s audience is intended to be inclusive and based on the sharing of common cultural knowledge and experience. Paradoxically, the Clique team seems to be guided by the principle of exclusivity, since it consists of a ‘pote band’ wishing to share their knowledge and provide a different vision of the world. All these ingredients now explain the success of Clique, which counts on its large digital audience to ensure the long-term success of its recent television channel.
