Why telepathy? Discussion of the article by Thomas Rabeyron, Renaud Evrard, Claudie Massicotte

Abstract

Starting from a reading of the text by Patrick Rabeyron, Renaud Evrard and Claudie Massicotte, “ ‘Es gibt Gedankenübertragung’ : Thought-transference and telepathic processes in analysis”, we will return to the path that led Freud to recognize the existence of thought-transference and his attempt to elucidate the nature of certain exchanges that take place outside the usual modes of communication. It seems to us that for Freud the question of the existence of telepathy was the result of an epistemological process that we will try to highlight. We will first examine the importance of perception and empathy in this process and then look at the place occupied by the body and the drive cathexis. We will show that the importance of the mechanism of regression as evidenced by telepathy should not lead us to underestimate the role of the drive and language. For the grounding of language in the drive, insofar as the latter engages sensoriality and infantile sexuality, enables us to think about the articulation between language and the infralanguage that presides over the telepathic phenomenon.
