Family placement and mediatised meetings from a systemic perspective

Abstract

`titrebFoster care and mediating work in parents-child meetings: a systemic perspective`/titrebThe placement of a child in a foster family de facto establishes a particular context of multi-parenthood, namely a double-parenthood with filiation links and affiliation ties. In some particularly delicate situations Judges order that professional childhood workers mediate in the parents-child meetings. It is a delicate exercise. Knowing that number of catamnestic studies show that the future of the placed children is often dark, the author hypothesizes that beliefs and usual practices stemming from these beliefs, do not help the professionals to problematize the question of the belonging of the child and the question of mutual attachments, in a way which allows therapeutic processes to be activated. On the contrary, these usual practices thwart the possibility that they might happen. By leaning on the systemic approach, he proposes a new definition of parenthood and a modelling of the mediating work in parents-child meetings (negotiation, contractualization, individualized project), to strive for the creation of a system which opens the possibility of a complementary double-parenthood, offering to the placed child a shared family supply and support, and if possible a temporary one.
