Female exhibitionism: Identification, rivalry and camaraderie

Abstract

The ancient figure of Baubo plays a key role in the Greek myth of Deméter and Persephone: it is thanks to his exhibitionist act that Let’s depression depression. This episode, which raises some questions about the meaning of female exhibitionism, departs from the first psychanalytic theories which associated it with a perversion or compensation for the lack of penis. In line with contemporary thinking about primary feminine, the authors of this article offer a broader understanding of female exhibitionism encompassing the pleasure of the female body and its sexual and reproductive functions. They regard female exhibitionism as both the expression of triangular or ‘oesdipian’ scenarios and the desire to attract the male, and a reflection of identification with the mother, homoerotic desires, rivalry or camaraderie movements towards other women, as well as the sense of power attributed to the female body and its abilities. According to the authors, sexual development is underpinned and characterised by the double existence of an early erotic desire towards the mother and identification with the mother. They present clinical material extracted from cases of adolescent and adult female exhibitionism illustrating these evocative aspects of the Baubo figure and discussing the technical issues raised by these cases.
