Studying in pandemic: experience of virtuality. Surveys of students. National University of Comahue

Abstract

The year 2020 found us all in an unknown reality, a product of the COVID-19 pandemic. Without exception, we all had to take new ways of living, studying or working in a context of isolation in which the potential became everyday. UNCo students were forced to change their study habits drastically, at the beginning with widespread uncertainty as to whether or not they would continue and then, with the passage of months, adapting within the limits imposed by isolation to virtual classrooms. Common study spaces such as libraries, open-air shared spaces and even common living spaces such as university canteens had to be replaced by more lone and often stressful ones. Many students managed to adapt more or less to this reality, for many even the experience was beneficial as it allowed them to better organise their schedules and even reduce travel and meal costs; however, for a large number of them the situation was extremely difficult. Undoubtedly, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed the huge social inequalities that exist among UNCo students, as in addition to those already present in ‘normal’ periods, those caused by a lack of access to much needed IT equipment or internet connectivity, lack of study space at home, health problems caused or related to COVID-19, among others. The National University of the Comahue recognises the efforts made by female and female teachers and students, and through the Secretariat for Planning and Institution Building, we have implemented institutional renewal in the face of the pandemic. This renewal, which began in April 2020 with a similar survey of NTeachers and continued in June with a similar teacher survey, was the framework for conducting the student survey carried out in September. The student survey, the main results of which are set out in this report, covers dimensions such as family, health, connectivity and equipment requirements, experience with the placement and virtual exams, experience with different tools and platforms such as the PEDCo, the link between students and teachers and government areas, the use of library services, among others. The team of the Secretariat for Planning and Institution Building thanked all the students for the time taken to complete the survey and the huge commitment to the responses. We are also grateful for the collaboration of the teaching staff in the areas of Reception and Recruitment, Fellowships, Library, Information Technology and Posgrand during the harnessing of the content of the survey, convinced that collaboration between dependencies is indispensable for growth as an institution. Finally, we are sure that the results presented in this report are a unique and irreplaceable input that will allow UNCo to continue the learning path not only for its students but for the entire university community. The pandemic did not end and in order to best transit the time to come, and to get out of this situation as a better university than when we start, we will have to make sound decisions taking into account the needs of students.
