Language and representation in Uruguay’s prediction: a reading of panic Indicios by Cristina Peri Rossi

Abstract

Summary The following article starts from the research on the role of language in the work of Pan Indicios by Cristina Peri Rossi. The hypothesis put forward to write the research work indicates that language, as a mymetic device of representation and creation, is a way of updating power relationships in Uruguay’s prediction. To develop such a scenario, a qualitative methodological pathway with an interpretative approach was followed and some objectives were raised: (I) reconstruct the history of the dictatorship led by Juan María Bodaberry, (ii) place the work within the literary tradition of the dictator’s narrative with George Lukács’ sociocritic approach and Pierre Bourdieu field theory, (iii) explain, from some authors, how language works as a mechanism of representation and power, (iv) analyse the work of the Uruguayan writer in the light of the conceptual framework set out above. It is concluded, first of all, that the work in fact corresponds to a mymetic representation language which implies a position which underlies the notions of hegemony and counter-hegemony. Finally, it is concluded that, faced with little criticism of the short-term situations to which the work was brought, this article constitutes a valuable contribution to the field of literary criticism.
