‘Small hours on that occasion’: When the reform of school rhythm reorganises time for education professionals

Abstract

This article builds upon fieldwork carried out in the Paris region and in a rural town. It stays clear from the social topic of the “scholastic and biological rhythm of the child” and focuses instead on the transformation of working time induced and revealed by the 2013 reform of school hours. Multitasking, unpaid work and competition are the recurring issues in formal interviews with and observations of the different actors of the “education community” whose fields are being redefined. While its effects vary across the categories of education professionals, a single professional logic seems to be imposed across the board. It is characterized by the amplitude and the fragmentation of working hours, and by the prevalence of the “hour” as the time unit is discussed and resented by all professionals. These results call into question the effects of a reform from the standpoint of the professionals who educate and assist school children.
