Qualitative processes in the Communication on Natural Disasters: experts’ speech against Journalists’ speech

Abstract

This article shows a qualitative comparison between the speeches of Experts (Red Cross, Civil Protection, UME...) acting on natural catastrophes and specialized journalists who cover such situations. This comparison is pro - duced from two focus groups (one for each group) and the support of a quan - titative analysis of 220 news items collected over a full year (between May 2013 and May 2014), in the main news programs of three channels of Spanish television. This research was conducted under the funding of the Fundación Mapfre: Ayudas a la Investigación Ignacio H. de Larramendi, and entitled: The construction of the message on natural hazards in the media, written by the signatories of this article. Our goal is to make the key elements of both speeches confronting con - cepts and concrete developments. For this we have used computer software Atlas.ti, which have created Networks or conceptual maps, to extract their main lines to confront and compare the two speeches. The result has been a complete qualitative analysis of the obvious confrontation in both speeches, showing important elements in the discourse of both groups.
