By a fragment of the history of a Portuguese immigrant established in the Central South coffee plant of the middle of the 19th century, the article seeks to recover aspects of the experiences experienced by legally free workers in that context. It is sought to demonstrate the coercive elements present in those employment relationships, the role played by the public authority in restricting the autonomy of workers, and the contradictions and conflicts present in the agreed process of ‘transition from slave to free work’.
