The family economy of textiles. Textile, clothing and labour productivity in the monographs of the families of the two worlds, 1857-1928

Abstract

Stéphane Baciocchi, Alain Cottereau and Anne Lhuissier presented the work programme (2017-2019) for the economic field surveys gathered in the series of workers of the two worlds. Their intervention began with a quick presentation of the 128 family monographs undertaken following the publication of the Atlas of European Workers (1855), highlighting the chronology of this corpus and its discontinuities. This presentation gave an initial look at monographs, the budgets of which make it possible to understand as closely as possible what he described as the family economy of textiles, that is to say, all the productive activities of manufacturing, processing or maintaining textiles, whether they are intended for commercial or domestic channels. Subsequently, S. Baciocchi, A. Cottereau and A. Lhuissier introduced various dimensions of labour productivity on the basis of an analysis of the monographs of the pads of the Paris collective urban factory (1857). The concept of labour productivity has been developed in an anthropological sense, which is very different from the traditional economic meaning: it is linked to actual evaluations of stakeholders, effectiveness of organisation and coordination between workspaces, well-being, ergonomics, joint skills and product quality. The analysis of the time connections — activities described very precisely in this family’s budget made it possible to highlight the combination of production scales, from the workshop to the ‘collective factory’.
