Organisational identities and schools Organisational entities and schools: Relevance and conditions of a conceptual transfer

Free full text available

International audience This article propose a critical discussion on the importation of the organizational identity concept – in particular the Hatch and Schultz (2002) model about the dynamics of organizational identity – from the organization theory and management fields, where this concept currently encounters a certain success, to the sociology of education and schools field. Taking into account the weak theoretical status of the school as a sociological category, the author considers the relevance of such a transfer. He discusses the sociopolitical, institutional and organizational conditions which are necessary to the development of organizational identities in schools. Among other things, the discussion shows that the current evolution of the education policies and regulation modes support differentiation between schools and thus the production of schools' identities.
