Crime is a privileged ground to reflect the fears of a moving society: comments collected by Jean-Marie Pottier

Abstract

RetroNews’ magazine allows us to explore historical events and periods as ‘moments’ that have been echoed by the press. By mobilising the archives of the contemporaneous newspapers, giving their voices heard, historians and historians call the journalistic narrative for the (re) discovery of the past. 4 major themes for historical and topical National Audience How has the press been reflecting, for more than three centuries, the major questions and developments in our societies? How does this “mirror” of the past make it possible to enter history as well as to deepen its knowledge? Crime is a privileged ground to reflect the fears of a society on the move. How criminology emerged in the 19th century? Before “criminology”, the first term to appear is “criminal anthropology” at a time when diffuse knowledge, instruments and thoughts converge in order to establish the scientific aspect of the criminal phenomenon. It is difficult, and certainly adventitious, to determine the point of reference to this subject, but it is probably possible to establish the point of reference in this field, but it is probably possible to use this forensic approach to establish the scientific aspect of this phenomenon. Lombroso demands the idea that the root cause of crime lies in body or mental abnormalities, that there is a necessary, permanent and logical link between these characteristics and the crime, a criminal predestination among individuals with such stigma: this is the idea of the ‘born criminal’. These theories of the ‘Italian school’ are perfectly embedded in this specific idea movement of social darwinism and build a canvas on which other schools, such as the French criminal movement, will be able to define themselves, in alliance or, above all, in opposition.
