Abstract

`titrebBehind the scene`/titrebFor a young psychiatrist, learning the profession is not a simple task, given the many different specializations from which he/she can choose. In establishing oneself as a psychotherapist, it is essential to be perceived by the patient as an individual with whom the patient feels comfortable revealing his innermost thoughts and feelings, and as a place where the patient feels comfortable seeking help in any context. In this regard it’s necessary for the psychotherapist to separate himself from his medical background and venture into the realm of psychology, where examination and objectification are not as easy to prove. He must take subjectivity into account, along with all the complexities this entails, and consider the patient’s words, behaviors and feelings not only as an illness, but as an attempt to say something. But what does “say something” mean? That is the question in psychotherapy, when inspired by psychoanalysis, and, more precisely, that is what makes it stand out clearly from other conceptions. The determining factor along the path to psychotherapy is the clinical encounter when it can play out in a context where the patient can find his place and his words. A long-lasting, outpatient context is particularly conducive to this. Under these conditions, an encounter with a psychotic patient can often be an important initiation in the sense that it brings to the psychotherapist a new relationship with the concept of language, and a different perception of what “speaking” is.
