Abstract
The furtive genre of remarriage comedies theorized by Stanley Cavell in 1981 in Pursuits of Happiness : The Hollywood Comedy of Remarriage deals with American cinema in the 1940s. Does it turn up again today in contemporary productions, as for instance in Doug Liman’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005) ? In a short text, closer to a film critique, but which takes an epistolary form, Stanley Cavell answers this query by questioning the very philosophical foundations of remarriage comedies and by exploring anew the perimeter of the notion of genre in cinema.
