“Almost a man’s voice”. What does Rilke mean to write poems in French at the end of his life?

Abstract

International audience Every poet has to invent his own language, even if it is in his native language. Every poet is a foreigner in his native language, that is the reason he has to invent his own language. But what does it mean for a poet writing in another language than his own language? This question is asked with regard to Rilke and his choice to write poetry in french, in the end of his life, between 1924 and 1926 (he is died on the 30th December 1926). He wrote about four thousands poems in french : Vergers, les Quatrains valaisans, les Roses, Les Fenêtres, Tendres impôts à la France, Le carnet de poche. Our purpose is to evaluate his compilation of french poems Vergers. Rilke explained his self on his choice to write in a « lent language »: he wanted to honour the French language by the unical gift he could do, that is to say poems.
