Italian and French students in the face of diversity. Comparative elements of analysis

Abstract

This study illustrates the reaction about the cultural and religious pluralism characterizing their societies, of two adolescent populations, an age which is decisive for the development of intergroup attitudes. It is a comparison between Italy, i.e. a context of recent immigration and France, with a longer immigration experience. The context differences can be summarized in a long immigration history and in the role of the national political culture about the ways to deal with this phenomenon. Faced with the “ordinary” impacts produced by the individual variables, the analysis of the effects of contextual variables provides more interesting results. The study emphasizes that stereotypes and attitudes toward immigration take different characteristics on the basis of the issues that this phenomenon raises in the national debate.
