Mining Integration and Supplementation Treaty between Argentina and Chile

Abstract

The year 1997 was considered by the National Mining Authority to be decisive in taking the necessary steps for mining integration between Argentina and Chile. Two protocols were signed which were considered to be of importance in assessing the completion of the long process of negotiations. The protocols will be called “Mining Project Facilitation Protocol” covering the Easter Lama project, which includes the area of operations located on both sides of the border, extending between the Carmen District of the Third Region of Ata-cama on the Chilean side and in the province of San Juan on the Argentinian side. The second protocol is referred to as the ‘El Pachón Mining Project Facilitation Protocol’. In this case the main feature is that the economic feasibility of the project is possible if the exploitation of the deposit and the export of its products are carried out through Chile, otherwise the project becomes uneconomic. Both projects involve the province of San Juan and their importance is international. International Economic Relations Bureau: Provinces Institute of International Relations
