State of play of writing centres and programmes in Latin America

Abstract

Summary This research sought to identify theories, practices and management processes of writing centres and programmes at universities in Latin America. To this end, an exploratory study was proposed, the main tool of which was an online questionnaire, based on two American research: “The Writing Center Research Project” and “The Writing Program Administration Census Project” Participaron in research 23 heads of schools and writing programmes in the region. The results presented here, based on a predominantly quantitative analysis, show a variety of very young programmes in their formation. Writing starts to be included in Latin American universities’ programme agendas, taking into account the institutional support given to these initiatives over the last ten years. With regard to the theoretical foundations, there was a diversity of approaches and positions that shape these centres and programmes differently from their predecessors in North America. The programmes include internships, mostly involving individual support through mentoring or collaborative work between language teachers and teachers from other disciplines. Administrative management poses a particular challenge in terms of measuring the impact of the programmes. Directors assume a number of functions which require comprehensive training in administrative tasks, which is not yet available in the region. These results demonstrate the need to strengthen the management processes of these initiatives and the relevance of strengthening their own research area.
