Learning, service and digital technologies: a possible relationship?

Abstract

the widespread use of digital technologies together with the extension of social media has created new communication and meeting spaces where people and social and political actors are interlinked. This opens up diverse spaces and opportunities for digital participation in a more accessible, instant, continuous, equal and personalised way. Digital technologies facilitate, in the first place, the distribution of and access to information, allowing autonomous and easy access to the public sphere without relying on the intermediation of professional information organisations. Secondly, they allow for interactive communication, which makes them a tool for direct interpellation, encouraging the revitalisation of deliberative practices that are part of the democratic ideal. Thirdly, interaction enabled by digital technologies facilitates the organisation and effectiveness of civic networks and citizen mobilisation spaces. Finally, participation mediated by digital technologies has implications for personal and social identity, making people around the world and members of a community where time and space disappear, confronting attitudes and values from different groups that are obliged to redefine their conceptions in order to determine their participation. Linking digital technologies with learning service projects makes it easier for young people, girls and boys to actually experience solidarity, responsibility and service to others, as well as satisfaction with the objectives achieved. In short, it facilitates the development of responsible and conscious citizenship.
