The dynamic distribution of sources of scientific capital between teachers/researchers of a postgraduate programme Stricto- sensu of a public university

Abstract

located in the context of universities and, more specifically, post-graduate studies, the aim of this study is to examine, in an exploratory manner, the dynamics of the distribution of scientific capital between teachers of a post-graduate programme in the strict sense of a public university. Specifically, how teachers distribute their activities among those enabling them to accumulate pure scientific capital (such as academic publications and contributions to the field of knowledge) and institutional scientific capital (such as the occupation of positions giving them decision-making powers in the field of science). The Bourdieu approach was considered (2003; 2004a; 2004b) with regard to the scientific field, because it makes it possible to apprehend the dynamics of the distribution of capital, which are specific types of power. The approach was quantitative and qualitative, using desk research in the Lattes curricula of 23 teachers participating in this programme, which is located in a city of Minas Gerais (Brazil) and is in the field of applied social sciences. As main results, the dynamics show (1) that the majority of teachers occupy middle positions within the distribution of capital; (2) there is a difficulty for a searcher to accumulate significantly both types of capital; (3) there was no polarisation among teachers based on strong accumulation of one capital, and weak accumulation of another; and (4) it is easier to convert institutional capital into pure scientific capital.
