With the analysis of documentary sources, the aim is to publicise how the El Petén district, under the political administration of the Audiencia de Guatemala, tried in 1823 to become part of the province of Yucatán. The original speech and arguments used by the petty elite to try to join Yucatan are analysed, as well as the radical transformation of the speech when the maya rebellion known as Castas War began. The emergence of the indigenous rebellion led the elite to decide to put an end to the idea of becoming a member of Yucatan.
