Rabelais pedagogue: Pantagruel and Gargantua at the School of Humanism

Abstract

Communication at the Colloquium of Sélestat, Autour des Cahiers d’Ecolier de Beatus Rhenanus, org. L. Naas, C. Benvent, 29-30 August 2014 What were the masters of Rabelais? The few pieces of information we have about his education are not safe, but suggest that he was the student of the Fanciscain Austers of Observance. Criticism is used to infer a tedious and ineptic instruction as described in the novels of Pantagruel (for the giant’s ‘university’ tour) and Gargantua (for dual education, schooling and humanist). This Communication seeks to reconstruct what the books of humanist apprentice giants could be.
