Education for death: Social imaginaries for teachers and university students in Colombia. A biographi-narrative study

Abstract

The central topic for analysis in this research is the social stereotypes of university teachers and students about education for death in the Colombian context. The social stereotypes were investigated listening directors, teachers and students of three faculties: Education, Medicine and Nursing from Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá (Colombia). The objectives were: Describe, categorize and systematize the stereotypes of the participants, deduce didactic implications and build pedagogical-didactic guidelines. The methodology was biographical narrative: autobiographical. Twenty autobiographical, individual and collaborative interviews were conducted. The findings were significant and recurrent in the stories of the participants. They expressed that Colombian universities should include education for death as an educational and curricular policy to re-build fear, not to put under taboo, reduce drama, and make abnormal the violent death. Finally, in all the stories the participants highlighted the role played by dead people in the “portrait of pain” of Colombia and these memories should allow to build communities of memory in the current post-conflict scenario.
