Mirror games. The Eurasist ideology and the allogenes of the Russian Empire
Disciplines

Abstract

This article aims to shed light on the mirror game that has developed since the fall of the Soviet Union between Russian Eurasists and Turkish-speaking Eurasists, mainly Tatars and Tats. The challenge here is significant: transforming into a new ideology promoting the Turkish-Muslim world one of the possible versions of Russian nationalism (advocating the existence of a third continent called Eurasia crossing the borders of the Russian Empire, in which Russians would play the role of ‘cement’ of all Eastern peoples in this area). These Tatar and Kazakh neo-Eurasists therefore call for historical rehabilitation of the Turkish-Eurasian world and a rebalancing of power in favour of them both in the post-Soviet space and in Russia itself. Such an intellectual game also implies, although not mentioned as such, the great forgotten of this debate about the “crossroads” people, Turkey: this article therefore also aims to open the “Eurasian” discussion to the Turkish world, starting with reflecting on the re-appropriation of the Russian Eurasist discourse by the Turkish-Muslim margins of the Empire.
