Political pamphlet

Abstract

As a violent and traditionally short writing, pamphlet usually presents itself as an indictment or whistleblowing process against a person, group or institution characterised by its intentional outrancier. Both their seemingly anecdotal and conjunctural content and their aggressive and ad hominem form may appear so excessive that they would be insignificant. They are part of a literature of mood and circumstance, which for a long time is regarded as marginal in relation to more noble or intellectual forms of speech. However, between the literalisation of politics and the politicisation of literature, pamphlet highlights, alongside well-known collective action repertoires (riots, strikes, demonstrations, etc.), the importance of symbolic action repertoires (or speech repertoires) too often neglected (see Rennes, 2011). Thus, historically, it has been possible for the pamphletary act to play a part in creating a public space in which politics is discussed, invective, denounced in the name of a mistaken truth or values.
