The text proposes a brief reflection on the topic of cultural patrimony and the philosophical and historical bases on which this debate has been structured in Brazil. The main criticisms of the preservation programme adopted in the country and the implementation, from 2000, of the policy of preserving intangible patrimony were sought, as an attempt to extend and address groups excluded by the substantive cultural policy.
