Aristotle in the 19th century

Abstract

Aristotle, forgotten for two centuries, became a contemporary in the 19th century. Supported by a remarkable editorial work mentioned by the names of Brandis, Bekker or Bonitz, this reassessment commits the different fields of philosophy. We turn to Aristotle to rehabilitate the metaphysical issue, but also to question the instruments of thought, concepts and categories, or to think about the relationship between philosophy and positive science. The Aristotle style, looking for a way of knowledge tailored to each object, with its demand of sobriety, is echoed by all those who wish to make philosophy a rigorous science. Depending on the context, the reading of his writings has nurtured very different philosophical traditions, ranging from philosophy to logic, from metaphysics to the revival of practical philosophy. This book takes stock of Aristote’s surprising news in the 19th century, following the contrasting interpretations of its main works. Through its three sections: 1. Criticism of idealism; 2. The return of metaphysics; 3. The logic of science, he stressed the essential role of Trendelenburg, Ravaisson and Brentano, while presenting several actors of this peripatetician passion (from Feuerbach, Droysen, Dilthey to Comte, Peirce or Łukasiewicz). With new texts from Brentano, a bibliography of Aristote editions and studies in the 20th century, it is a reference book.
