Abstract

Considering the very meaning of teaching literature and probably its future, it is time to challenge both the author’s annexation by ‘literary history’ and its exclusion for the sole benefit of ‘textual analysis’ and its methodological derivatives. The question of ‘author’ — the singularity of a life immersed in language — is at the heart of the feeding experience of reading. if, at the invitation of the Centre for Research on Literary Modernities of the University Michel de Montaigne (Bordeaux 3) and the IUFM of Aquitaine, writers, biographs, literary theorists and teaching specialists in French have agreed to take this controversial issue of ‘the author’ seriously, considering it as a major variable in the reality of the text and the relationship with him. Indeed, this volume presents a range of new approaches and perspectives, in the light of ongoing research. It thus proposes to offer both the ordinary reader and the researcher, a subject that can be used as an inventive criticism. The four strands that organise this book — “Ouvertures”, “Les speeches de légitimation”, “Links and territories”, “The challenges of a relationship”, far from purporting to conclude the discussion, suggest instead the dynamics of this, with a “face”, a “body” and a “life” that are irreducable to those of the civil status, the authors are first and foremost the embodiment of their works as they are received and perceived by an era. one generation, but also through memory and institutions, so it was necessary to try to disentangle the frame of this fable by ceasing to compare ‘biography’ and ‘mythography’, history and legend, portrait and icon, in an attempt to recognise what, over time, connects us in many ways to this so familiar foreigner, which is referred to as ‘author’ — a concept which, in all latitudes, has always been reinvented. It is the task of teachers to testify, less as text technicians than as smugglers, always on the spotlight.
