The Artois Comtes and their archives. History, memory and power in the Middle Ages

Abstract

stored in the Departmental Archives of Pas-de-Calais, the Artois Comte Charters Treasury (xiiie-xive centuries) brings together tens of thousands of documents whose wealth is sometimes unknown. The studies gathered here focus on the constitution and conservation of this fund, the history of documentary production (cartoons, surveys, accounts) and, more generally, the history of the counties and county of Artois (political society, county government and administration, judicial practices, removal practices, genealogical memory). The book is part of the current renewal of the history of writing practices. Through the diversity of themes and approaches, it provides an overview of the Artois Comte archives and, beyond that, provides research perspectives. It will draw the attention of the scientific community to an exceptional documentary fund and will make an important contribution to the knowledge of Artois in the Middle Ages and, more broadly, of the Kingdom of France in the last Capetians.
