Men, power and conflict: Studies on the South American colonial border and its crisis

Abstract

The book begins with the work of Juan Marchena, who is looking for a long term into the impact of the Spanishine conflicts on the peninsula at American level, from the Amazon to the River de la Plata. This work thus allows us to find ourselves at the other level of the book analysing war at the border; firstly towards the south rioplatense and then, in a second block, the analysis is shifted towards the northern border of the Platin region. The work lies in the rioplatense area as a constituent part of an extensive hispanolusitan and indigenous border area. With regard to the Hispanolusitane relations in the rioplatense area, this was an area of constant exchanges between Spanish and Portuguese. After the Tordesillas Treaty, the rioplatense area was definitively signed as a border region. The fact that it was impossible to establish a length of land and to indicate exactly the place where the Tordesillas imaginary line passed left the region definitively established as a border area between the peninsular krona. Relations between people from both krona in this region were too special. These individuals perceived the reality of the border as everyday, far from the geopolitical perspectives of the respective krona. Following the idea of the permeability of the border, a third layer of work moves to the borders on the move, the border being understood as the open permeable place where all societies interact: the Hispanocriolla, the Portuguese and the indigenous, creating within this world a complex ethnic mosaic in which the peninsular krona had to devise different models of control and organisation. Finally, the cluster on historiography, memory and identity closes the book by opening the debate on the topic raised.
