The idea of a university: Anthology of the debates on higher education in Quebec of 1770

Abstract

The debate on high knowledge institutions in Quebec goes back as far as the Conquête and has never stopped, both in English and French speakers. With the foundation of McGill Universities in 1821, and Laval in 1852, followed by other higher education institutions, discussions ceased to be purely theoretical. The idea of a university is now evolving with its implementation. It is often those who dedicate their lives who feel the need to take stock of what higher education has become: William Dawson, Édouard Montpetit, Marie-Victorin, F. Cyril James, Guy Rocher. But the central role of the university in society is a subject of wider debate, involving both the leaders of the Church, such as Mgr Bourget and cardinal Villeneuve, and all those concerned by public affairs: Lionel Groulx, Gérard Filion, André Laurendeau. While the history of the University in Quebec remains to be written, this anthology gives at least a first sketch. It clearly shows that the very idea of a university has evolved along the lines of the different lines of thought that have competed for two hundred years in the political and social arena. Mgr Hubert’s reluctance to see a young people squeeze too closely at the Enlightenment, in the Rioux Report, which wanted to integrate into the university artistic training which had previously been part of specialised schools. We move from those like Stanley Gray who want to put the university at the service of the Revolution, to those who first want to make it an instrument of economic and regional development. While all agree on the importance of the university, there can be no unanimity in this agreement, and the ensuing debates are always exciting.
