Abstract
Human beings change, design and ‘artificial’ geographical circles to the point of wondering whether nature still has a place there. The very title of that question, which serves as a basis for the book, gives rise to the hypothesis of a decline of that nature. However, it is not so much the impact of human intervention on it that our reflections take place. The more we tried to answer this question, the more our attention turned to the relationships that societies build with nature. In other words, grasping its place in a variety of geographical backgrounds is inextricably linked to the diversity of cultures and beliefs, social relations and often complex games of actors. These are all parameters to be considered in their current and past dimensions. More than ever, nature is in society, so we try to say. Without claiming to be exhaustive, various cases, especially in Europe, North America, Africa and more succinctly in Latin America, refer to the variety of situations. The texts of this book came from a colloquium that took place in Ennevelin (North) in October 2004.
