Youth policies in the UK and France

Abstract

In the 21st century, youth is very often associated with negative representations. If we rely on political discourse, media and public opinion in the UK and France, young people would be a poorer generation that is dangerous for the social order. However, as this book shows, the main challenge faced by public authorities on both sides of the Channel is the decline in traditional forms of youth participation in political life. Bringing together contributions from youth sociologists and politicians, this book addresses the issues of political engagement, citizenship and changes in youth policies. In both countries, there is a confrontation between two main types of youth policies. Firstly, a ‘law enforcement’ component which uses public measures based on stigmatisation and social control; secondly, a new ‘support’ component aimed at promoting citizenship and participation in public life and bringing about renewed forms of political engagement. Although promising, this second approach is not without tension and contradictions, as highlighted in the work here.
