Samuel Beckett’s prose: Discursive configuration and progression

Abstract

“Find a shape that accomodates disorder, that is now the task of the artist.” Samuel Beckett’s formula serves as a guideline for this collective reflection on the writer’s narrative prose, paying attention to the evolution of his poetic. Taking note of the resistance of the texts to reading, the study describes their organisation through the combination of two basic jurisdictions: configuration operations, which condition the understanding of style facts linking texture and structure; a highly mathematical method of progression, involving the expression itself in a tension between obligation and ‘impediment’. This dialectic of form and movement is part of the pace of speech deployment. The textual analysis applied at different stages, according to various linguistic parameters, makes it possible to identify the paradoxical conditions of representation, which call into question the status of the subject, the imagination of the language and the literary codes. Beyond the confusing or even darkness effects, the speech involves the player in the games of language, exploiting the palette of humour and irony. The growing role of imagination and perception in the scenography of the writing process, the move towards a bribe syntax confirm the relevance of intersemotic perspectives (theatre, painting, music) to reflect an ever more demanding aesthetic experience.
