Abstract

Situated in the Gulf of Guinea, the Beninese coastline has been subject — on some chainsaws — to fairly rapid erosion in recent decades. This coastal erosion is currently mainly due to human activities, including sedimentary disturbances caused by the construction of various dams, including the Nangbéto dam on the Mono River; blocking coastal transit through Cotonou port works; beach sand quarries; and the reduction in sedimentary inputs from the west as a result of various coastal protection works. Using the multi dates function available in Google Earth, this article estimates the area eroded in Cotonou between 2002 and 2011 east of Lake Nokoué. In addition, it assesses the number of houses destroyed and the number of people forced into forced migration. The figures are important as 100 metres of coastal zone have completely disappeared in a decade on a stretch of almost six kilometres long in the middle or near periphery.
