Abstract
Clinical neuropsychology has changed profoundly over the last thirty years: the classical anatomoclinical method has gradually given way to cognitive approaches to disorders, new rehabilitation practices have developed and methods of medical imaging have renewed the way patients are examined and treated. This book, presented in two counts, takes stock of these developments in current clinical practice. The first volume is devoted to evaluation and diagnosis. He wishes to introduce French-speaking clinicians into the logic of examining cognitive disorders and language occurring in adults after brain injury. It also presents the basic elements of neurological examination and identifies the relevance of brain imaging techniques for clinical activity. Each chapter relating to the assessment of a cognitive function starts with a short presentation of the semmiology of disorders and a reminder of current theoretical frameworks. This is followed by the presentation of the tools and objectives of the evaluation. This involves introducing the main assessment methods and tests in use, discussing their relevance, interpretative logic and psychometric qualities (sensitivity, calibration, ease of use, dimensions examined, etc.). Whenever useful, the chapter also contains a discussion of environmental problems and the presentation of more environmentally friendly assessment tools whenever such instruments exist. Most chapters end with the presentation of a case. All of them contain numerous illustrations, and they all end up with bibliographic information allowing readers who want to know more to turn to other readings.
