Abstract

In 2013, a desk study was carried out which showed that the area is located on the late lactal terrace of the Niers-Rhine. According to the geomorphological map of the Netherlands, there are pods of a plainy drainage system, a low formed by excavation, terraces and terrace wells. Locally, eolically disposed sand may be present in terrasafes in the form of deck sand or river dune sand. These deposits have given rise to the formation of farmland, leaching and woodland. In the western part of the planning area, the ‘De Gravenhof’ Castle was present in the Middle Ages (AMK site 565). Two drills were carried out on the site of this AMK site and, during the implementation of this project, a Requirements Programme was drawn up for the future archaeological research in this AMK field. In the immediate vicinity of the planet, residues are known mainly from the Roman period to the late Middle Ages. These are mainly occupancy residues. However, residues were also found from the period neolithicum until the new time. During the drilling survey, bed or terrage deposits belonging to the Kreftenheye Formation were found in the form of a plain with or without slight beds, almost all the route of the planned press pipe in the underground. River dunes have been found in a small part of the area. In general, a weak humous topsoil between 30 and 50 cm thick appears directly on the C-horizon. It may consist of loam or moderately coarse to very coarse sand. Soil conditions can be classified as leek and woodland and perennial soils. The soil is intact on a few small spots. However, the soil is largely disturbed on the site of the waste water treatment plant. Most of the site is likely to have been too wet for residential purposes, but there are also some higher and drier areas within the plantation area which have been further investigated by means of a drilling survey. However, with the exception of one area, there was no indication that there was a dwelling there. One part is possible and old arable layer is present. In this relatively high zone there is also a 40-50 cm thick plaster deck. A high expectation has been attributed to this part of the planning area.
