Marriage and labour mobility: the equality dilemma

Abstract

The geographic mobility clause as a condition for regulier advancement in the square is generalised, including for dental reputies. We rely here on a qualitative survey conducted with around 40 male and female banking executives, whose square evolution is CONDITIONAL by their ability to agree to work in another city or region, in the meantime. This management of banking staff is based on the implicit idea that “the family will follow”. Sedentaires or mobile couples try to resist professional pressure to push for a common life at the cost of sometimes painful renunciation, with geographic mobility being an aggravating factor in terms of the professional register. However, these arrangements have their limits when one of the spouses, most often the epouse, refuses to “follow”, which may lead to a form of intermittence of marital life. These marital phases are not equivalent to the two members of the couple, but rather suffered rather than chosen, they nevertheless present an inedite experience of marital marriage at the same time as a placement has the test.
