Sermon’s commentary on the mountain by Saint Augustin and the morality of Thomas

Abstract

La Secunda Pars de la Somme theologique cannot be understood without the augustinian comment of Sermon on the mountains. This comment is a work of young people, a bit rigid, but of great value. Saint Augustin is the only Pere to comment on Sermon for the same day. The Eveque d’Hippone wants to convince its auditors on the issue of the best Chinese morals. However, even more important in this comment is the question of seeking happiness, which he wishes to answer. The Beatitudes then appear as the reference text. Saint Thomas takes over the option of Saint Augustin when he deals with the New Law. The Sermon on the mountains replaces the Decalogue as the heart of Chreties’ morals. Augustin reverted to the work of Saint Ambroise on the eight Beatitudes as a Chretian’s way of life. Augustin’s comment is based on his personal experience as described in the Confessions. It is a virtuous road to take. MT 5 is the response of Christ lui-me to happiness. Saint Thomas changed and synthetised the choices of Saint Augustin by focusing even more on the theme of happiness. Trafficking in Beatitudes is the first place in the plan of its moral theology. Its approach is more speculative. The link between Beatitudes and tenure is more clearly meant. Saint Thomas believes that Saint Augustin’s life needs the help of Esprit Saint and his donations. Still, Thomas is more speculative and more systemic than Augustin. Finally, the Beatitudes are linked by Augustin to Pater’s applications and Esprit donations. Augustinian education on the Notre-Pere was only rarely taken up by Saint Thomas.
