This article reflects on the erasure of Afro-Brazilian culture’s memory in Brazilian museological institutions based on categories such as heritage (material and immaterial), museums, and collections. It contemplates the latent contradictions, negotiations, tensions, and disputes regarding Afro-Brazilian heritage and how it is represented in museums. We will analyze how museums focus or not on this issue, either by silencing collections and heritage references of African origin in most of them or by the almost total absence of museums exclusively dedicated to Afro culture in Brazil. On the other hand, the article presents some cases of Afro-Brazilian intangible heritage highlighted by the application of the federal legal protection instrument called ‘Register of Immaterial Cultural Goods’ and some of their implications. Finally, as an emblematic case of resistance and erasure, it will discuss Porto Maravilha, in Rio de Janeiro, a restricted and fruitful space in references to this facet of our history.
