Australian Operating Mines Map 2021 ; Purpose The map shows the location and status, as at 31 December 2021, of Australian operating mines, mines under development and mines under care and maintenance. Developing mines are deposits where the project has a positive feasibility study, development has commenced or all approvals have been received. Mines under care and maintenance have known resource estimations and may be mined or developed in the future. In 2021, Australia had over 300 operating mines producing 26 major and minor mineral commodities (seega.gov.au/AIMR). Mine status is shown by a symbol and coloured by mineral commodity grouping. Not shown on the map are the large number of excavations for a range of industrial materials and gemstones. ; This data accompanies the Australian Operating Mines Map 2021 (twenty-second edition) March 2022.
