Abstract
International audience ; OBJECTIVE: To predict the coast-wide risk of drowning along the surf beaches of Gironde, southwestern France.METHODS: Data on rescues and drownings were collected from the Medical Emergency Center of Gironde (SAMU 33). Seasonality, holidays, weekends, weather and metocean conditions were considered potentially predictive. Logistic regression models were fitted with data from 2011 to 2013 and used to predict 2015-2017 events employing weather and ocean forecasts.RESULTS: Air temperature, wave parameters, seasonality and holidays were associated with drownings. Prospective validation was performed on 617 days, covering 232 events (rescues and drownings) reported on 104 different days. The area under the curve (AUC) of the daily risk prediction model (combined with 3-day forecasts) was 0.82 (95% CI 0.79 to 0.86). The AUC of the 3-hour step model was 0.85 (95% CI 0.81 to 0.88).CONCLUSIONS: Drowning events along the Gironde surf coast can be anticipated up to 3 days in advance. Preventative messages and rescue preparations could be increased as the forecast risk increased, especially during the off-peak season, when the number of available rescuers is low.
Emergency room intervention to prevent post concussion-like symptoms and post-traumatic stress disorder. A pilot randomized controlled study of a brief eye movement desensitization and reprocessing intervention versus reassurance or usual care ; J Psychiatr Res
Up to 20% of patients presenting at an emergency room (ER) after a stressful event will for several months suffer from very diverse long-lasting symptoms and a potentially significant decline in quality of life, often described as post concussion-like symptoms (PCLS). The objectives of our randomize...
Uncertainties in Shoreline Projections to 2100 at Truc Vert beach (France): Role of Sea-Level Rise and Equilibrium Model Assumptions
Ensemble-based simulations of future shoreline evolution to 2100, including sea-level rise driven erosion, are performed and analysed Future shoreline projections uncertainties are initially controlled by modelling assumptions and after 2060 by sea-level rise uncertainties The choice of wave-dri...
Decadal beach-dune profile monitoring along a 230-km high-energy sandy coast: Aquitaine, southwest France
International audience ; Large-scale coastal monitoring programs are challenging to maintain over time but are necessary to understand and further predict complex coastal evolution and resilience. The 230 km-long Aquitaine coast is a high-energy meso-macrotidal coast composed of beach-dune systems s...
Primary drivers of multidecadal spatial and temporal patterns of shoreline change derived from optical satellite imagery
International audience ; Understanding and predicting shoreline change along sandy coasts requires continuous (in both time and space) long-term (decades) shoreline data at good spatial (e.g. 100 s of metres) and temporal (e.g. months) resolution. Publicly available satellite imagery can now provide...
Alongshore-Variable Beach and Dune Changes on the Timescales from Days (Storms) to Decades Along the Rip-dominated Beaches of the Gironde Coast, SW France
International audience ; The high-energy meso-macrotidal 110-km long Gironde coast, SW France, is primary composed of quasi-straight sandy beaches bordered by high and wide coastal dunes. Beaches are intermediate double-barred and are essentially morphologically variable alongshore with ubiquitous r...
The role of physical disturbance for litter decomposition and nutrient cycling in coastal sand dunes
International audience Disturbance increases ecosystem functioning in productive habitats but its effect in stressful conditions is less documented, although this is crucial for understanding the resilience of disturbed systems to natural and anthropogenic disturbances. Our goal is to assess the inf...
Morphological and ecological responses of a managed coastal sand dune to experimental notches
International audience In northern Europe, coastal dune remobilization by restoring natural processes is considered by some to maintain the coastal dune in chronically eroding sectors by migrating landward and to restore dune ecology. In wet climatic contexts, this nature-based solution has been sho...
Beach recovery from extreme storm activity during the 2013-14 winter along the Atlantic coast of Europe
The storm sequence of the 2013-14 winter left many beaches along the Atlantic coast of Europe in their most eroded state for decades. Understanding how beaches recover from such extreme events is essential for coastal managers, especially in light of potential regional increases in storminess due to...
[Consensus methods: review of original methods and their main alternatives used in public health] ; : Méthodes de consensus utilisées en santé publique
International audience ; BACKGROUND: Consensus-based studies are increasingly used as decision making methods, for they have lower production cost than other methods (observation, experimentation, modelling) and provide results more rapidly. The objective of this paper is to describe the principles...
