Abstract

The availability of clean water is crucial for human life. Water leaks in household facilities and in the distribution network of the supply system result in high levels of consumption, which are reflected in monthly bills. Poor management and inadequate maintenance of the national potable water distribution networks accelerate their degradation and create future problems. In the Penipe and Saraguro cantons of Ecuador, water losses due to deficiencies in municipal companies, as well as factors like theft and leaks, generate significant economic losses. This research employed a qualitative methodology to identify and repair leaks, as well as a quantitative methodology to process the values of injected and billed water volumes. Through an analysis of the technical water balance according to Cabrera (1999), it was found that Penipe and Saraguro have percentages of unaccounted water leaks of 49.2% and 55.33% respectively, based on a study conducted from 2018 to 2022, in which they obtained performance ratings of 'poor and unacceptable' for the system. Based on the findings, an action plan has been developed to minimize the amount of leaked water and economic losses.
