Some of the newly rich resort to one or several domestic helps on a full-time basis to provide household services. Since the 2000s, private schools of butlers have been set up across the world to cater to what is believed to be an expanding market by providing for a trained and selective personnel. Over the course of several weeks, students, geared towards high domestic service positions within households, learn to incorporate the ways of being, tastes and life styles seen to be reflective of the aristocratic classes of the turn of the 20th century, designed by the founders of these schools as benchmarks of the higher society way of life and the art of serving of the butler. Yet, this aristocratic figure, European and ancient, of the butler seems ill-suited to the expectations of the new rich. This article explores what this reliance on domestic workers by the higher and extremely wealthy classes tells us about the contemporary channels of mimicry and distinction between the older and the new wealthy classe
