Abstract
How to report on the adherence to Nazism by tens of millions of ‘ordinary’ women and men, German and Austrian· nes, who have supported it for years? The search for personal development encouraged by the regime, be it erotic adventures, emotional interpersonal ties forged in Nazi organisations or marital life, has contributed to the internal cohesion of Nazi society. This is one of the strong assumptions of this book of great originality. Sexuality, intimate and politicisation of desires were at the heart of Nazi business. This is shown by Elissa Mailänder, relying in particular on an analysis of a mass of archives (some of them private) relating to sexuality, friendships and the friendly and marital life of individuals in Nazi majority society — ‘Aryens’ and heterosexual. As a result, the building of a racist, highly politicised, segregated and violent community is unveiled in the ground, both locally and privately.
