The European Opinion in 2013

Abstract

The European Union is the Nobel Peace Prize! The Norwegian Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union in October 2012 for its contribution for 60 years to the advancement of peace, reconciliation between peoples, democracy and human rights in Europe. The European Union is indeed the world’s largest provider of humanitarian and development aid today. This award is an opportunity to remind us that this initiative led by the founding fathers to put an end to the Franco-German conflict, to combat totalitarianism and above all to promote a free, prosperous and united Europe, celebrated by the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950. Although the sovereign debt crisis and the recent downward negotiations on the 2014-2020 budget have led to a rise in criticism, citizens’ opinion shows the expectation of a common public authority. The announcement of the possible disappearance of the Erasmus programme has also given rise to strong criticism and has been defended in several European countries. The discussions on economic governance and the agreement on the creation of a European patent can be seen as a major step forward for the European Union. As Croatia is about to join the EU and the 2014 European elections are on the way, it seems important to take stock of European opinion. Led by Dominique Reynié, a politician, professor in Sciences po and Director General of the Foundation for Political Innovation, a team of authors from multiple backgrounds decorates the emergence of a European opinion through: Their analyses, focusing on topics such as women in Europe, the European opinion on the European budget, the award of the Nobel Prize, European action and solidarity, China’s ambitions and vision towards Europe, reflection and historical feedback on Europe’s founding fathers. And as every year a comprehensive analysis of European political forces through the results of the local and national elections, which took place in each of the European countries in 2012. An analysis of European civil society movements. (Editor summary)
