Self-compact concrete incorporating marble waste

Abstract

[PT] The construction sector is responsible for high consumption of raw materials and intensive waste generation, and is working on the creation of procedures and products, increasingly seeking sustainability. Self-compact concrete (BAC) allows the production of greener material, for example by reusing industrial waste. In this work, an experimental programme has been developed to optimise BAC compositions incorporating the residue from the improvement of marble from the Alentejo region in Portugal, known as the Mármore Area. The experimental programme was carried out following a factorial plan at concrete level, fixing the composition of the paste in order to optimise the solid skeleton formed by the aggregates. The results obtained led to the conclusion that it is possible to replace cement with marble powder without significantly affecting the properties of self-compacting and thus achieving lower resistance and more eco-efficient BAC compositions suitable for a wide variety of structural concrete applications. This work was financed by the Project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-007457 — construct — Instituto de I -D em structuras e construções — financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through COMPETE2020 — Operational Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalisation (POCI) and national funds through the Foundation for Science and Technology I.P. The authors also thank the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), the Fluminense Federal Institute (IFF) and the Centro Tecnológico da Pedra Natural de Portugal (CEVALOR) for the support of the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).
