Conceptualising sustainable transport through pro-social behaviour

Abstract

This document reports on the need to increase the effectiveness of sustainable transport policies on changing attitudes towards the use of different modes of transport through pro-social behavioural measures, which can create moral obligations to take part in prosocial activities through occasional relationships included in the Norm Activation Model (NAM). Mobility and sustainable transport are a priority objective for intervention by national and international institutions. The measures taken need to be accompanied, in order to be effective and to bring about a change in behaviour towards public transport, by campaigns that influence pro-social attitudes. The intention to reduce car use is mainly explained by variables related to morality and personal rules, as well as attitudes towards the most used transport system (public or private) are closely linked to individual experiences. The application of the Norm Activation Model (NAM) for a sustainable transport and mobility strategy represents the activation of pro-social behaviour to bring about changes in citizens’ travel behaviour and to establish a correlation between policies consistent with the prosocial measures adopted.
