Abstract
[EN] Children’s and youth literature (CYL) has a great potential for encouraging reading both in mother tongue and foreign language (FL), although its use in a FL classroom is scarce but necessary. This paper presents some projects in which CYL is used together with reading strategies of Montserrat Sarto (1998). The projects have been carried out with Slovenian children in Slovenian as their mother tongue and in Spanish (FL) classes. Meanwhile the reading strategies based on constructivism facilitate personal experience of reading and increase reading competence in both, mother tongue and foreign language, the use of CYL in Spanish (FL) classes increases the degree of authenticity in contact with literature written in Spanish.
