Reconversion of the Tánger bull place

Abstract

[ES] The privileged location of Tangier has made it for much of its history a key place at many historical times. Given its multicultural nature, we can find architecture in this city of different times and civilisations. The bullrage, which was involved in the project, was declared a cultural heritage; but despite this for its citizens, it continues to symbolise the invasion of Spaniards during part of their history. That monument was built on the road connecting Tangier to Tetuan, a district of the population originally dedicated to animal husbandry, characterised by its nature and extensive green spaces. Over time, its current image is completely different, due to the growth of the city, which is currently divided by three different urban and social neighbourhoods. The aim of the project is to make the bull square the epicentre of social and community action, bringing together all the needs identified in the neighbourhoods and creating a social and cultural centre that promotes the value of Moroccan culture and tradition. The aim of the intervention is to reverse the imposition of Spanish culture, symbolised in the bull square, through the promotion of the place such as Souk. As this is a conversion, the intention of the project is to preserve the square and open it to the city. The strategy consists of releasing the ground floor and locating the programme in metal dry-built modules, with the aim of not limiting the changing aspect of the place which, during its short history, has hosted, inter alia, an immigrant reception centre and various performances for the city.
